I completed a Bachelor of Business Leadership and Commerce with an International Business Major at Macquarie University in April 2022. I have always been in leadership positions and have loved exploring my whole life.
Every single job I've held after exchange has asked about my study abroad/exchange program and what I learnt. The program inundated me with transferable life skills, allowed me to holiday and explore, and gave me friends for life.

Campus Life

Campus is huge, full of green as it's a distance from the city, where everyone is so chill.
There's a main train line that runs from the CBD to campus and up north, along with buses and shuttles to other campuses too.

Campus Facilities:

Campus was huge with multiple areas to hang out, eat, and study.
The Business School is separate to main campus with its own programs and spaces.

Support Services:

The exchange advisor was happy to help put you in contact with anyone you needed, and so was Macquarie.
They want you to have the best time possible.

Sports:

There are 4 houses within the Uni with many weekly sport options.
I played Ultimate Frisbee, and represented the University as a Varsity player too where I played against other Canadian Uni's and got to travel over Ontario.

Societies:

There are about 100 different clubs and societies from sport, academic, cultural, historic, and hobbies and interests.

I did a lot of travel afterwards which is where the majority of my money went

Money Saving Tips:

Save for double that you think you need. There are also heaps of Uni and government grants available.

Home Sickness / Loneliness Tips:

I did about 1 month in during my mid sem exams.
I really focused on trying to see friends more often and study with them, whilst maintaining consistent contact with my family, partner and Aussie mates.
Do not hesitate to reach out to counselling services too, they understand what you're going through and do help a lot.

Easy, went to campus cards, took a photo and go the card on the spot.

Application Process

You need to apply early as places fill up quick!
Applying is simple but it really pays to work close with your home Uni, and host facilitator to help you.

Looking Back at My Experience...

Originally unsure whether I would study abroad with all the unknowns, I was extremely close to not applying. In the end, exchange was THE BEST thing that I have pushed myself to do - I got to live in another country, meet global friends, travel to nearby countries, make life-long memories and in general have a great time, all while studying! I still can't believe I almost missed out on this opportunity simply because I was too 'unsure' to apply - do not make the same mistake. Hopefully sharing my experience helps!

What I Liked Most:

I really enjoyed the benefits I reaped from really putting myself out-there. Studying in a world class University with diverse people's was incredible and gave me a huge network of new friends, professionals, and academics which has boasted my career pathways.

Plus being able to travel for 2 months afterwards with friends was awesome as well and one of the best parts.

Improved:

I wish Universities promoted exchange and study abroad programs so much more as it's immensely valuable.
I also would have liked an estimate of how much everything was going to cost as I was not entirely prepared for that.

Orientation/Onboarding:

You have to start getting organised extremely early, 6-8 from the start would be ideal.
It pays to have a very clear understanding of what units are left in your degree of your home country to plan where the overseas ones can fit.
I had to organise where I'd stay, how I'd survive, and transport, which the host Uni helped with immensely.
You get settled maybe 2 days before the semester starts and it flows from there.
The orientation is how you imagine it to be in North America- parties, friendly people, activities, site-seeing etc.

How My Home Institution Prepared Me:

Macquarie made it very clear what units would go where and what I would have left to do, what grants and scholarships were available for me, and gave me a guide of how to plan everything with the abroad Uni.
If you're not already, you will learn independence very quickly.
